Students stage education protests nationwide

Posted in German News by xavierng on 22/11/2009

Tens of thousands of German students took to the streets on Tuesday to demonstrate against contentious reforms to the country’s educational system and lacking funds for universities and schools.

Around 6,000 students participated in a central march in Berlin, according to the police. Demonstrators carried banners reading, “Welcome to the education factory” and “Education too expensive? What does stupidity cost?”

Protests were planned for more than 40 cities across the country including Heidelberg, Bayreuth, Nuremberg, Münster, Aachen, Cologne, Bonn and Essen.

Many university students are upset over the introduction of bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Others complaints include overloaded degree courses, the introduction of modest tuition fees, social inequality within the educational system and chronic underfunding.

“We’re asking ourselves if we’ll even have a chance in the job market with a bachelor’s,” said one student at a protest in Cologne. “It’s irresponsible.”

German Education Minister Annette Schavan on Tuesday morning expressed understanding for some of the students’ concerns, but emphasised education was a top priority for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s new centre-right coalition.

“I agree with the points about improving the curriculum,” she told public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk. “The federal government will invest €12 billion in education over the next four years.”

Tens of thousands of students took part in nationwide protests in June. The new wave of demonstrations is expected to continue into December.

Rose et noir

In 1577, Pic Saint Loup, once the greatest couturier in France, receives the commission of his career. King Henry III engages him to create the most beautiful wedding dress for the marriage of one of his nephews to the daughter of a Spanish nobleman. The problem is that Saint Loup must travel to Spain, a staunchly Catholic country that brutally oppresses free-thinkers, Jews, gays and non-Catholics – which is unfortunate because these are exactly the kind of people that make up the couturier’s entourage. Still, Saint Loup accepts the commission, not realising that his secretary is a closet Protestant who intends using the expedition to avenge the St Bartholomew Massacre…

Gay Film-Eyes Wide Open

Posted in Film by xavierng on 19/11/2009

Eyes Wide Open

Aaron (38) a respectable butcher in the Ultra Orthodox Jewish community of Jerusalem is married to Rivka (28) and is a dedicated father to five children. After his father’s death, Aaron is looking for an assistant to replace him. One day, a young and handsome homeless Yeshiva student, Ezri (19), enters the butcher shop by chance. Ezri and Aaron have a nice conversation in the shop, and the day after Aaron discovers that Ezri spent the night on a bench on the street. Aaron takes pity on Ezri’s and decides to be his patron. He hires him to work in his butcher shop, teaches Ezri the craft of slaughtering, and houses him in the shop’s back room. Aaron also introduces Ezri to the community, and invites him to eat meals in his house. Gradually, they become friends and even soul mates. One day, when they go to a remote “Mikve” (a sacred ritual bath) an intimate moment occurs between them, which bring them to make love. From this moment onwards, Aaron knows no peace. Aaron develops deep feelings towards Ezri. He spends more and more time with him, slowly neglecting his family and community life, and is swept away in a whirlpool of love and lust for Ezri. However, Aaron is a God-fearing person who greatly loves his family, and so he feels immense guilt and torment which he expresses in physical rituals of self-punishment. When Rivka suspects that something is wrong with Aaron, she goes to Rabbi Vaisben (56) the head of the “Modesty Guards”, a radical law authority in the Ultra-Orthodox community. The Modesty Guards start to follow Aaron and he begins to notice eyes wide-open observing him from each corner. Aaron tries to put barriers between him and Ezri; one time he even expels him from the store. However, each time he gives in to his love and passion and asks Ezri to return to him. One day Rivka discovers an item, a love souvenir that Aaron had received from Ezri. Since her worst suspicion is now confirmed, she decides to take action. Under enormous pressure that Rivka and the Modesty Guards put on him, Aaron inevitably reaches a decision to commit an irreversible act….

Director :    Haim Tabakman

Eyes Wide Open – trailer with English subs

“Eyes Wide Open” un film gay israelien, sur Yagg

Taboo-breaking “Eyes Wide Open” is an intense, restrained drama about a married butcher who falls in love with a seductive younger man in Jerusalem’s insular ultra-orthodox community. Sensitively helmed feature debut by Haim Tabakman boasts a tightly structured, multi-layered script by Merav Doster, intimate lensing and strong, credible performances. Quietly devastating pic reps a natural draw for gay, Jewish-interest and upscale auds that could be exploited by fests and niche arthouse distribs in most territories.

Im watching Barbapapa hahaha

Posted in Life by xavierng on 17/11/2009

Barbapapa himself is a generally pear-shaped, pink shapeshifting blob-like creature who stumbles upon the human world and tries to fit in. The shapeshifting is usually accompanied by the saying “Clickety Click—Barba Trick” (in the French version “Hup Hup Hup, Barbatruc” and “Huub huub Barbatruc” in Dutch, in Turkish version “Değiş Tonton” means “Transform Barba!” in English, and “Resta di stucco, e’ un barbatrucco” in the Italian version). After various amusing adventures, he comes across a female of his species (more shapely, and black-coloured), named Barbamama. They produce seven children, known as the Barbababies, each a different colour:
Barbazoo (Barbidou in French), yellow, male, lover of animals
Barbalala, green, female, lover of music
Barbalib (Barbotine), orange, female, lover of books
Barbabeau (Barbouille), black and furry, male, lover of art
Barbabelle, purple, female, lover of beauty
Barbabright (Barbibul), blue, male, lover of science
Barbabravo (Barbidur), red, male, lover of strength and heroism

Sally Mann

Posted in Photography by xavierng on 17/11/2009

Biography

Sally Mann was born in 1951 in Lexington, Virginia, where she continues to live and work. She received a BA from Hollins College in 1974, and an MA in writing from the same school in 1975. Her early series of photographs of her three children and husband resulted in a series called “Immediate Family.” In her recent series of landscapes of Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, and Georgia, Mann has stated that she “wanted to go right into the heart of the deep dark South.” Using damaged lenses and a camera that requires the artist to use her hand as a shutter, these photographs are marked by the scratches, light leaks, and shifts in focus that were part of the photographic process as it developed during the 19th century. Mann has won numerous awards, including Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. Her books of photographs include “Immediate Family,” “At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women;” and “Mother Land: Recent Landscapes of Georgia and Virginia.” Her photographs are in the permanent collections of many museums, including The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
